This is bullshit and here’s why:

Fashion revives and lives on and on, certain trends come and go like seasons. Grunge and gothic fashions are no different. While today’s grunge and goth are different than their predecessors, the key elements are basically the same.

90’s grunge is a homage, in a sense, to 70’s punk. The attitude, lifestyle and music basically reflect a “stick it to the man” sense of behavior. Through the music, both mirror anti-socieital, political, and behavioural sentiment as a way of backlash to traditions of everyday normality.

Today’s grunge is a modern-day adaption of it’s predecessor. The roots and intent are the same, with the differences being more colorful, feminine and developed for modern tastes. If this is “fake” or “wrong” to you, then by all means tell me that I’m a ~poseur~ for dressing in these styles.

High fashion brands have also taken gothic fashion and made it their own, creating pieces for market consumption. This makes it more understandable and approachable for an audience outside of the stereotypical gothic lifestyle.

The latest trends; nu goth, pastel goth, etc; still carry the essence of the subculture at heart. At one time, the gothic subculture rejected Gothic Lolita fashion because it was too new, and not “goth” enough for their standards. Now, it is a respectable subgenre and can be related to Victorian goth.

With that in mind, people create clothing and styles to fit their lifestyle and their interests. Regardless if you believe that today’s grunge and goth are “fake,” it is not up to one’s personal opinions to decide. Fashion moves on and people will continue to dress how they please and take examples from previous trends to make them new again. Who are you to say that one is not goth? Who are you to say that a style that takes from a previous form isn’t grunge?
