THIS IS NOT TRUE. Jo did not say this. The snake that Harry freed at the beginning was a Boa Constrictor, and Nagini, although python in appearance (in the movies at least), does not fit any known snake breed, therefore it has been concluded that she is a snake only found in the magical world. The Boa was from Brazil. And obvious difference, the boa at the zoo was a dude. Nagini’s female in gender.

Also Voldemort found Nagini when he was in hiding in Albania and the Boa Constrictor went back to Brazil after Harry freed it.

In fact I’m pretty sure Jo confirmed that Nagini was not the boa, because the fans did think of it and asked her about it.
